Neon & Nonsense is the only way to describe Chicago’s biggest music weekend, just ask Travis Scott who kicked off his Saturday set yelling “We want rage!” But the mayhem started before Scott’s riot inducing performance. On Friday, the fest hit the ground running with highly anticipated sets from The Weeknd and Paul McCartney, to after parties with A-Trak and Stefan Ponce. Fast forward to Saturday, which hosted the best line-up as Team Neon golf-carted from back to back acts of all our favorite artists. Aside from Travis Scott’s performance we checked out Kid Cudi, Tyler, The Creator, Sam Smith, G-Eazy, and Metallica, making stops at the Just ★ Don Mitchell & Ness pop-up shop in between. Sunday’s lineup seemed tame in comparison, although the same could not be said for the weather. In usual Chicago Lolla tradition, the fest had to be evacuated due to threatening storms, but as always the show went on. The highlight of Sunday was A$AP Rocky, who ran through his catalog of hits, giving shout-outs to Chicago favorites Chief Keef, Chance the Rapper, and ultimately bringing Vic Mensa on to share the stage. Mensa and A$AP performed Mensa-Kanye’s “U Mad” and snuck in everyone’s go-to Nirvana song, “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” The team finished the weekend with an avant-garde performance from FKA Twigs right before the storm gave the music fest’s big finale.
