Rick Owens DRKSHDW FW ’16 Editorial

Rick Owens’ most recent mainline collection was an anxiety-driven masquerade of clothing that pooled and draped over the runway models. A plethora of pockets, huge hemlines, and a mix of skinny elongated and cropped jackets executed in shearling and thick textures. The inspiration for the collection came from Owens’ inner turmoil with adverse changes to the environment.

As always, DRKSHDW gives us a refined look into the mainline collection. The Fall/Winter 2016 offering sees the return of some classics, in the gimp hoodie, level crewneck, and Detroit jeans. The season’s staple piece is a padded bomber, complete with carrying strap. Owens’ newest iteration of Aircut pants speaks to the main collection, shying away from the ultra-skinny fit.

When it comes to shorts, we generally put off wearing them until the weather channel declares a heat wave. As opposed to carrying over the pants and jeans you’ve practically lived in for the last three months of winter (feels like six if you live in the Northern Hemisphere), do some spring renewal with this seasonal pants edit.

1.Givenchy Cargo Trousers-Take a utilitarian route in these lightweight 14-pocket trousers. Just make sure you remember which pocket you put your phone in.

2.Raf Simons x Sterling Ruby Blue Denim Jeans-Electric blue was all over the runways for this season and the perfect excuse to revisit one of our favorite collaborations. Side note: the white and blue colorway of this pair is reminiscent of the work Sterling Ruby did on the walls of the Raf Simons Tokyo boutique.

3.STAMPD Essential Moto Pants-We’re always on board with anything “moto” and especially if it is on a cozy pair of lounge pants.

4. Band of Outsiders Melting Plaid Sweatpants-The LA label turns their laid-back aesthetic up a notch with this wavy plaid pair of pants inspired by the “idea of a Nixon-era dad barbecuing and taking psychedelics.”

5. DRKSHDW by Rick Owens Aircut Jeans-DRKSHDW lets Rick Owens’ fans trade in their leather pants for a more seasonal approach with waxed cotton denim.

6. Oyster Holdings LAX Sweatpants-This season typically means vacation, which we all know is a sport in itself, making these structured yet comfortable pants an ideal in-flight uniform.

“I like reducing things to what’s essential. I like erasing the unnecessary, doing things shorthand and getting to the point,” says Rick Owens. The minimalistic spirit of the DRKSHDW designer is both an explanation for why his diffusion label name has no vowels, but also what attracts us to the collections time and time again.

Tops with slightly longer hems, shorts that drop just a bit more than expected, macabre patches, and wax coatings are all part of Owens’ minimal rebellious twist on wardrobe staples. While we’ve come to expect Owens’ pallid color palette, the centerpieces amongst this spring collection are the reflective silver flight jacket and high-tops. That being said, DRKSHDW by Rick Owens S/S ’15 will have you standing out day and night.
